Insee PremièreProvisional Account for Agriculture for 2019 Sharp Fall in Wine Production

Sabine Aufrant, Xavier Guillet, Philippe Lauraire (division Industrie et agriculture, Insee)

In 2019, agricultural production falls by 2.0% in value. This fall is due to crop production, which suffered from the sharp fall in wine production (-13.7%). At the same time, the increase in volumes of cereals barely offsets the fall in their prices. In contrast, the value of animal production grows, under the effect of the very steep increase in global pork prices.

Simultaneously, farmers’ expenses increase moderately (+0.7%), due to a slight fall in volumes and a slight rise in the prices of materials. Therefore, the fall in production combined with this increase in expenses generates a clear decrease in value added of the agricultural sector. Besides, agricultural employment continues to decline. Overall, according to the estimates of the provisional account for agriculture, the gross added value at factor cost per worker would fall by 5.9% in 2019 in real terms, after an increase by 7.0% in 2018.
