Insee Première Auto-entrepreneurs registered in 2014: three years later, 36% of them are active

Damien Richet (pôle Démographie des entreprises et des établissements, Insee)

Three years after their registration, 36% of auto-entrepreneurs registered during the first half of 2014 are active under this scheme. Indeed, among the 66% who actually started their business, only over a half have survived to the three-year mark. For the same generation, the proportion of conventional sole proprietorships active after three years is much higher (63%).

The proportion of auto-entrepreneurs active three years after their registration depends heavily on their economic activity. The highest proportions are in human health and social work activities (60%) and education (48%), while the lowest proportions are found in construction (36%); professional, scientific and technical activities (36%) and trade (28%).

Sustainability increases in line with the age of the auto-entrepreneur and with the financial resources available upon start-up of the business. Sustainability also increases if the business constitutes a principal activity from the outset, rather than a supplementary line of business.

Auto-entrepreneurs registered in 2014 and active three years later reported an average turnover of 10,300 euros in 2016. Turnover was highest in accomodation and food service activities and construction. One in every two auto-entrepreneurs report that they are satisfied with their results during the previous financial year.
