In 2016, the top 1% of the highest paid public employees earned more than €6,410 net per month per full-time equivalent. These 48,500 employees, whether or not they were civil servants, earned an average net monthly wage of €7,850, which is four times the median wage in public services. More than half of them worked in hospitals. The others were concentrated in the State public service, mainly in central administrations. The regional public service was almost not represented among the highest wages. Highest wages in the private sector were higher than in public services (the last percentile exceeded by 30% the one in public services) and the range of earned incomes was wider.
