Between 2014 and 2017, 18% of the population living in metropolitan France have moved out at least once. Young people and tenants are more concerned than average.

Becoming home-owner is one of the reasons for moving out. Hence, 12% of adults who were not owners in 2014 have become so between 2014 and 2017.

Improving one’s housing conditions may also be the reason for a relocation. Hence, for at least one year among 2014 and 2017, almost three persons out of ten have experienced housing difficulties, due to overcrowding or lack of comfort. For one person out of ten, these difficulties are persistant. Mobile people experience more often these difficulties, but in their case those are more likely to be temporary. Moreover, one relocation out of five comes with an improvement of housing conditions. Low-income households, single-parent families or tenants are more likely to endure persistant housing difficulties. Furthermore, one person out of ten lives in an overcrowded dwelling, often on a persistant manner.
