In September 2017, 256,500 people lived in Mayotte. From 2012 to 2017, the population grew by an average of 3.8% per year. The pace of growth is picking up compared to 2007-2012, breaking with two decades of gradual slowdown. Mayotte remains the French Department with the greatest demographic growth, ahead of Guyana.

The most sizeable increases in population came in the municipalities of Dembeni, Bandraboua, Tsingoni and Bandrele. The population is concentrating around Mamoudzou.
