Insee FocusWhen a relationship breaks down, the man more often stays in the conjugal home

In 75% of divorces or civil partnership breakdowns, one member of the couple is still living in the conjugal home one year later. Far more men than women stay in the conjugal home during the first year, but the gap between men and women narrows in subsequent years. The gap is wider in rural areas than in large cities. Where the couple has children, the custodial parent is more likely to remain in the conjugal home.
