Insee PremièreCamp sites: Comfort and visitor numbers on the rise

Florent Favre, division Services, Insee

In 2016, 710,000 pitches are available at 7,800 campsites across metropolitan France, a 2.1% drop since 2010. Many empty pitches have been converted into fully equipped pitches.

Nevertheless, visitor numbers have risen by 7.5% thanks to longer opening seasons (from May until September) and higher occupancy rates. Coastal areas continue to attract more than half of campers, although growth there is slower than in rural and urban areas. Non-resident tourists prefer empty pitches and up-market campsites. They are less likely to go to coastal campsites than resident tourists.
