The housing stock in France at 1st January 2014
On 1st January 2014, Metropolitan France had 33.9 million housing units, of which 83% were main residences. The Paris agglomeration had 16% of the main residences and rural areas had 44% of the secondary residences. Six out of ten households owned their main home; this proportion has increased since the 1980s and has stabilised since the late 2000s. In the overseas departments, the housing stock grew faster than in Metropolitan France, from 2% to 3% per year over thirty years versus 1% per year in Metropolitan France.
