Insee PremièreEngineering in France in 2012 – A dynamic sector, still with low concentrations

Zoubir Bouziani, division Services, Insee

In 2012, engineering enterprises generated turnover of nearly 45 billion euros and contributed 0.9% to GDP. The construction market was the leading client of this industry. The engineering sector has low concentrations, as large enterprises have only modest weight. Nearly 40% of turnover was generated in engineering subsidiaries owned by groups from other sectors. Over the long term, the size of the sector has grown in the economy, reflecting a greater use of this type of activity in dedicated enterprises and also a strong presence internationally. Taking into account the high qualification level of the workforce, staff-related expenses represented 88% of added value. France was in third position in Europe in terms of engineering activity.
