Trade margins vary for different products, but supermarket chains present similar figures

Supermarket chains recoup very small margins on fuel and higher margins on foodstuffs and personal and domestic products. For each family of products, their margin rates are consistent and often lower than those practised by specialist stores, thanks to a higher volume of sales. Supermarket groups apply lower margins to those families of products which represent a greater proportion of their total sales than they do for rival groups.
