Energy consumption in industry remained stable in 2014, but the total cost decreased

Marlène Bahu, division Enquêtes thématiques et études transversales, Insee

In 2014 the volume of energy consumed by the industrial sector was the same as it had been in 2013, down 19% on the total recorded for 2005. This trend mirrors the downward arc of manufacturing output. Total spending on energy continues to fall (-5% in Euros at fixed value) due to the declining prices of coal, oil products and gas. Gross energy consumption stood at 35.4 million tonnes of oil equivalent, at a total cost of 15.2 billion Euros. Gas and electricity remain the most widely-used energy sources.
