Gambling in France
In France, the attraction for gambling progressed constantly until 2004-2006 (0.9% of household consumption) and has slipped back slightly since (0.8% in 2012). Between 2000 and 2012, the amounts wagered increased by 76% in value to €46.2 billion in 2012. Over the same period, net spending by gamblers after deduction of their winnings increased by 48%, from €6.4 to €9.5 billion. Prior to 2010, the gambling sector was organised into three main parts: La Française des Jeux (FDJ), Le Pari Mutuel Urbain (PMU) and casinos. Activity of the FDJ and PMU was very dynamic between 2000 and 2012, while that of casinos slowed down from 2007.
