Transport in 2009: a slowdown despite an upturn starting in Q2
Transport-sector turnover declined 5.7% in real terms in 2009. The downturn concerned nearly all forms of transport. The decrease was more moderate for passenger transport services. The latter and ancillary sectors, whose prices rose in 2009, drove up total transport-sector prices by 0.9%. By contrast, freight-transport prices fell 3.8%. Employment fell for the first time in three years, losing 2.1%. The steepest drop was in road hauling, which shed 5.4% of its jobs. However, between 2000 and 2008, value added per job rose in nearly all categories, particularly air and rail transport.
