The EC survey on information and communication technologies (ICT) use and electronic commerce in businesses is part of the European survey program, in accordance with the Commission implementing regulation (EU) FRIBS 2020/1197 of July 30, 2020.

The aim of the ICT survey is to improve understanding of computerisation and the dissemination of information and communication technologies in enterprises.

It aims notably to assess the place of new tools in external business relations (internet, electronic commerce) and in their internal working (cloud, information systems security, integrated management systems, artificial intelligence).

This survey is in line with the thematic surveys carried out since 2001 at the initiative of Eurostat.

The ICT-VSE survey on enterprises with less than 10 persons employed is, for Eurostat, an optional extension to the ICT survey for enterprises with at least 10 persons employed. It was carried out in 2012 for the first time and then repeated in 2016, 2022 and 2026 using an adapted questionnaire to take into account the specific characteristics of these very small enterprises.

In 2022, the enterprise replaces the legal unit (that was used in 2012 and 2016) as the interrogation unit.
