TThe General Industrial Classification of Economic Activities within the European Communities (NACE) was adopted in 1970 to establish a common classification of economic activities in the European Community and ensure the comparability of national and European classifications and therefore of national and European statistics, but it was not the subject of EU legislation.
The first release of NACE was applicable from 1970 until 1989. A first revised version of the NACE came in force the 1st January 1990 (NACE rev. 1) and the second revision was to be used from january 2003 until december 2007.
Since the 1st January 2008, the NACE rév. 2 has replaced the previous version.
