Definition

The ton of oil equivalent (toe) is an energy unit corresponding to the quantity of energy contained in a ton of standard crude oil, i.e. 41.868 gigajoules in the International System of Units.

This unit is used to express the energy value of various energy sources in a common unit. For electricity, one tonne of oil equivalent is exactly 11.63 MWh. For other energy sources, one toe is conventionally associated with, for example, 1,616 kg of coal, 1,069 m³ of Algerian gas or 954 kg of motor petrol.
