The Official Statistics Authority (ASP)
The Authority was created as a result of article 144 of the law on the Modernisation of the Economy of 4 August 2008.
The role of the Official Statistics Authority is to ensure that the principle of professional independence is maintained in the design, production and dissemination of official statistics.
Missions of the Official Statistics Authority
Professional independence
This principle of independence in respect to any pressure from political, regulatory or administrative bodies, as well as from private sector operators, ensures the credibility of statistics. This has been enshrined in French law since 4 August 2008.
Methodological rigour and ethical principles
The Official Statistics Authority is also vigilant to ensure the quality of official statistics, whether in terms of methodological rigour or respect for the various ethical principles.
A reference tool: the European Statistics Code of Practice
The Official Statistics Authority adheres to the European Statistics Code of Practice , promulgated by the European Commission in 2005 and recognised by a European regulation of 2009.
