Between the end of December 2023 and the end of March 2024, private payroll employment increased by 0.2% (that is +50,500 jobs) after -0.1% in the previous quarter (that is -12,600 jobs). Private payrollemployment exceeded its Q1 2023 level by +0.5% (+101,100 jobs) and its pre-sanitary crisis level (end of Q4 2019) by +6.2% (that is +1.2 million jobs).

In Q1 2024, private payroll employment rose by 0.2%, after -0.1% in the previous quarter

Between the end of December 2023 and the end of March 2024, private payroll employment increased by 0.2% (that is +50,500 jobs) after -0.1% in the previous quarter (that is -12,600 jobs). Private payroll employment exceeded its Q1 2023 level by +0.5% (+101,100 jobs) and its pre-sanitary crisis level (end of Q4 2019) by +6.2% (that is +1.2 million jobs).

Temporary employment decreased less strongly than the previous quarter

In Q1 2024, temporary employment decreased again, but less strongly than the previous quarter: -0.2% after -1.7% (that is -1,400 jobs after -13,000 jobs). Temporary employment was below its Q1 2023 level by 4.8% (that is -38,300 jobs) and 2.7% below its pre-sanitary crisis level (that is -21,200 jobs).

As a reminder, in this publication temporary workers are accounted for in the temporary employment sector which pays them (within market services), whichever sector they carry out their assignment (agriculture, industry, construction, services).

Excluding temporary work, private payroll rebounded in market services

In Q1 2024, private payroll employment excluding temporary work in agriculture decreased by 0.3% (that is -1,000 jobs) after a rise of 0.6% in the previous quarter. It was slightly below its previous year level (-0.4%).

Industrial private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) kept rising in Q1 2024: +0.2% after +0.3% (that is +6,400 jobs after +8,600 jobs in the previous quarter). It topped its Q1 2023 level by 1.0% (or +33,100 jobs). After having reached its pre-sanitary level in Q4 2021, it exceeded it by +2.9% (+90,900 net job creations since the end of 2019).

In construction, private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) decreased again in Q1 2024: -0.5% after -0.2% (that is -7,900 jobs after -3,500 jobs). It was below its Q1 2023 level (-1.1%; that is -17,700 jobs) but remained well above its pre-sanitary level (+6.7%, that is +99,300 jobs compared to the end of 2019).

In market services, private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) rebounded in Q1 2024: +0.4% after -0.1% (that is +48,100 jobs after -16,100 jobs). It topped its Q1 2023 level (+0.8% or +94,300 jobs) and exceeded sharply its pre-sanitary level (+7.8% compared to the end of 2019 or +906,600 jobs).

In non-market services,private payroll employment (excluding temporary work) increased again in Q1 2024: +0.2% after +0.3% (that is +6,400 jobs after +9,500 jobs). It was above its Q1 2023 level by 1.1% (or +31,000 jobs) and its end of 2019 level by 5.4% (or +140,600 jobs).
