The indices are calculated by INSEE based on the data collected by INSEE's Centre for Industrial Statistics (formerly the Industrial Studies and Statistics Service - Sessi - of the Ministry for Industry) and by the professional organisations accredited to conduct the branch surveys.

This is the same branch survey programme that is used for the industrial production index (IPI). As the statistical weight of small businesses in industry is low, only businesses with more than 20 employees are involved.
