2019In May 2019, manufacturing output increased strongly (+1.6%) Industrial production index - May 2019
In May 2019, output increased in the manufacturing industry (+1.6%, after a virtual stability in April), as well as in the whole industry (+2.1%, after +0.5%).
All series are seasonally (SA) and working-day adjusted (WDA).
The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

- Output bounced back in petroleum and refined products (+0.4% after −1.5%)
- Output slipped back in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−0.9% after +1.1%)

Manufacturing output increased slightly over the last three months (+0.2%), as well as in the whole industry (+0.5%).
Over the last three months, output grew strongly in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+2.5%), in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+2.0%) and more moderetaly in “other manufacturing” (+0.2%). Conversely, it decreased in the manufacture of transport equipment (−1.2%), in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−0.7%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−1.0%).

Over a year, manufacturing output increased (+1.4%)
Manufacturing output of the last three months increased compared to the same three months a year ago (+1.4%), as well as in the whole industry (+1.4%).
Over a year, output of the last three months increased in “other manufacturing” (+1.0%), in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+3.6%), in the manufacture of transport equipment (+3.6%) and in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+1.2%). It soared in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+9.8%). On the contrary, it decreased in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−1.3%).

In May, output accelerated in “other manufacturing” (+2.6% after +0.3%)
Output kept growing at a high rate in pharmaceuticals (+14.6% after +8.1%). It bounced back in chemicals (+4.1% after −0.2%), in other manufacturing, repair and installation of machinery and equipment (+0.9% after −0.9%) and in manufacturing of rubber and plastics products, and other non-metallic mineral products (+1.3% after −2.7%). Conversely, it decreased slightly in the manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products (−0.4% after a virtual stability) and in the manufacture of wood, paper and printing industries (−0.2% after −1.6%). It was virtually stable in the manufacture of textiles, wearing apparel, leather and related products (+0.1% after +5.6%).
Output kept growing strongly in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply (+4.6% after +4.0%)
Output increased again strongly in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (+5.2% after +5.0%).
Output bounced back in the manufacture of transport equipment (+3.3% after −3.1%)
Output bounced back in the manufacture of other transport equipment (+4.5% after −4.3%) and in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi−trailers (+1.8% after −1.7%).
Output bounced back in petroleum and refined products (+0.4% after −1.5%)
Output bounced back in petroleum and refined products after an incident in a refinery during the previous months.
Output slipped back in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−0.9% after +1.1%)
Output decreased in the processing and preserving of meat and production of meat products. It also decreased in the manufacture of beverages.
Output slipped back slightly in machinery and equipment goods (−0.5% after +0.3%)
Output slipped back in the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (−2.3% after +3.0%). On the contrary , it bounced back in the manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. (+1.0% after −0.7%) and more significantly in the manufacture of electrical equipment (+0.3% after −3.0%).
