Public sector salaries in 2006
In 2006, public sector employees received an average gross monthly salary of €2,606, 14.6% of which took the form of bonuses and supplementary income. After deducting social security contributions, the average net monthly salary was €2,182. In 2006 it was up 2.6% in current Euros on 2005, rising by the same amount as the gross salary. Given an average annual price rise of 1.6% in 2006, average net and gross salaries increased by 1% in constant Euros. Changes in average salaries are affected by upward mobility and promotions awarded to existing employees, but also by departures, particularly retirements, and recruitment. The average net income of workers employed in 2005 and 2006, meanwhile, increased by 3.4% in current Euros, or 1.8% in constant Euros. Over four years, the average net income of employees having been in their jobs for twelve months in 2002 and 2006 increased by an annual average of 1.1% in constant Euros.
