Payroll employment in tourism: a new estimate
In 2003, tourism generated 900,000 salaried jobs in Metropolitan France. The proportion of tourism in total payroll employment was thus 4.3%. This proportion was particularly large in mountain resorts. Restaurant services, ahead of the hotel industry, was the activity providing the largest number of jobs in tourism. But many of these jobs also came in activities such as non-food trade and supermarkets and hypermarkets. Seasonality of employment, which is very pronounced, is at a maximum on the Atlantic coast.
