French automobile industry experiences slowdown in 2006

Catherine Fresson-Martinez, division Comptes et études de l'industrie, Insee

In 2006 the slowdown in the French automobile industry became more marked: production volume fell by 5.7% after a fall of 1.6% in 2005. For the first time, French constructors produced more vehicles abroad than in France. These difficulties result from lost domestic and European market share linked to an ageing range, a lack of new models and increased competition. The second-hand vehicle market, meanwhile, continues to expand. The fall in salaried employment which began in 2005 became more pronounced in 2006, and was higher than in the manufacturing sector overall.
