2008: a tough second half for hotels, a reasonably satisfactory season for camping grounds
The 2008 economic downswing does not seem to have affected the camping season in France: attendance was up slightly on 2007, driven by the performance of camping sites offering light-frame accommodation for campers. By contrast, the first effects of the crisis in the hotel industry were visible by August, and persisted until year-end. The greatest shortfall concerned foreign visitors, particularly in three- and four-star hotels, whose installed capacity is still increasing as a result of investments made in recent years. Occupancy rates therefore declined more steeply at the high end than in lower categories, where supply is tightening.
