Wallis and Futuna : 2008 population census shows 10 % fewer inhabitants than in 2003
Wallis and Futuna had 13,445 inhabitants in 2008. The archipelago, the smallest French territory in the Pacific, is located 2,800 kilometres from French Polynesia, 2,100 kilometres from New Zealand, and 20,000 kilometres from Paris. In five years, high emigration and a slower birth rate caused the population to drop by 1,500. There are few new arrivals and the population is ageing. Housing modernisation continues. The employment rate remains low.
