Slowdown in the automotive industry in 2005

Thierry Méot, Insee

In 2005, the output of the French automotive industry decreased by 3.5% in volume. Exports fell and French brands lost market shares in Europe. Domestic demand remained stable but took a greater share of imported goods. Moreover, French automobile companies were also hit by the high rise in purchase prices. However, employment in the industry remained stable, with French automobile companies compensating for the difficult situation in Europe with their results throughout the world, in particular in emergent countries. During this difficult economic situation, and facing challenges for its future, the automotive industry continued its research and innovation activities in France.
