Annual census surveys 2004 - 2006 - Southern and Atlantic coast départements profit from internal migration

Arnaud Degorre, direction régionale du Nord - Pas-de-Calais, Patrick Redor

The differences are increasing between Atlantic coast and southern départements, whose populations are growing strongly, and central and north eastern départements, where there is stagnant population growth or even, in some cases, a noticeable population decline. Since 1999, more so than during the previous decade, internal migration has enhanced these departmental disparities. Household life cycles underpin urban migration rates and explain the demographic dynamism of rural and peri-urban areas.
