Self-employed workers

Franck Evain et Michel Amar, Insee

There are 2.3 million self-employed workers, liberal professionals, farmers, chief executives of industry, business and the service sector, and company managers in France. These workers form an extremely heterogeneous group, varying in terms of levels of qualification, company size, and even revenue. In 2002, their average annual income, including any salaries, was €30,400, ranging from €14,000 for farming to €54,000 for the liberal and related professions. They earn on average more than employees, due in the main to their age and their longer working hours.
