Employment in local authorities on 31st December 2004
On 31st December 2004, local authorities and their public establishments in mainland France and the DOM (overseas departments) employed 1.78 million people. This number increased slightly more during 2004 (1.7%) than it had in 2003 (1.6 %). The moderate growth of municipal and intermunicipal organisations (+1.5%) seemingly contrasted with the sustained dynamism of intermunicipal organisations (+8.9%). The number of subsidised contracts continued to fall (26,800), particularly youth employment, and, to a lesser extent, other types of contracts. Both diploma holders and those without a diploma not in subsidised employment contributed equally to the overall total increase (more than 3%). The share of local authority jobs involved in community and leisure activities had doubled in ten years. The fire emergency service forged ahead in 2004 with a growth of 5%, whilst employment in the police force stabilised after strong growth during the previous years.
