Protecting the environment: an aim for the large majority of French people
Protecting the environment is an important issue for French people. When collection facilities are provided, nearly seven out of ten households sort their rubbish for recycling. On the other hand, less than one in two households is willing to make a financial outlay to buy energy-saving electrical goods. Well-off households are more likely to purchase energy-saving goods, but this is often cancelled out by their increased use of these goods and by the large number of electrical goods they own. Furthermore, 60% of people living in rural or periurban areas drive to work or to their place of study; their reasons for this choice are comfort and a lack of public transport.
