Government authorities, customers of the service SMEs

Yohan Baillieul, division Services, Insee

In purchasing service provisions, government authorities make equal use of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and large enterprises. They therefore turn to service SMEs more frequently than commercial companies do. Despite this, the revenue obtained from authorities represents a very small proportion of the total revenue for service companies: 6 %, whereas companies represent 70 % of the revenue and individuals 24 %. For companies who have government authorities for customers, the proportion of revenue coming from contracts placed by authorities is naturally much higher. Here again, orders from authorities account for a larger proportion of revenue in the case of SMEs: 20 % of the revenue compared to 12 % for the large enterprises.
