Household consumption: where are various products bought?
In 2006, 70% of food purchases were made in supermarkets, 40% of clothing purchases were made in small businesses and 42% of consumer durables were bought in specialist superstores. However, purchase behaviour depends greatly on household characteristics, such as where they live or their standard of living. Indeed, the wealthiest people and Paris residents prefer to shop in small businesses, while households on low incomes increasingly do their food shopping in super discount stores: 18% in 2006 compared with 14% in 2001. Despite being on the increase, online shopping accounts for few products and quite a low proportion of expenditure.
