The drivers of the service economy: interior momentum and outsourcing

Xavier Niel, Mustapha Okham, division Services, Insee

In 1978, a quarter of employment was in the industrial sector, but today that figure is only 14%. This transformation of the French manufacturing landscape and employment has benefited health, education and social services, but also services provided by companies to other companies. The growth in the service economy is based on three phenomena: since the end of the 1990s, households have bought more and more market services; manufacturing output has been augmented with non-material components; and tertiary activities which were previously carried out in-company have been outsourced.
