Turnover in the retail trade and personal services - December 2012

Every index in this issue is in volume, seasonally and working-day adjusted (SA-WDA).
In December 2012, the volume of sales went up compared to November in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.5%) and in household services (+0.9%). Conversely, it downturned in accommodation and food service activities (–1.2%). It was broadly stable in the retail trade, except for motor vehicles and motorcycles (–0.1%).
Over the last quarter 2012, the volume of sales went down in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (–2.1%, q-o-q) and, to a lesser extent, in the retail trade, except for motor vehicles and motorcycles (–0.5%). On the contrary, it grew in household services (+0.9%). It was broadly stable in accommodation and food service activities (–0.1%).
Over the year 2012, the volume of sales slumped in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (–7.3%, y-o-y). It also slipped in accommodation and food services activities (–2.5%) and in household services (–1.0%). On the contrary, it increased in the retail trade, except for motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.5%).

According to our early estimate, the volume of sales in the retail trade is expected to increase (+0.9%) in January 2013.
Revisions
The evolution in November has been revised by –0.5 point in accommodation and food service activities and +0.2 point in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles. These variations, announced at +1.5% and –3.4% last month, have been corrected at +1.0% and –3.2%.
