The consumer price index decreased by 0.1% in September 2010

Monthly change: —0.1%; year–on–year: +1.6%

In September 2010, the consumer price index (CPI) decreased by 0.1%, after an increase by 0.2% in August. Year-on-year, he was increasing by 1.6%.

The price index without tobacco decreased also by 0.1% in September (+1.5% year-on-year).

Adjusted from the seasonal variations, the monthly change increased by 0.2% (+1.6% year-on-year).

The decline of the September index came mainly from the seasonal decrease in prices of services at the end of the summer time, decrease partly counterbalanced by the seasonal increase in prices of manufactured products at the end of the summer sales and by the rise in prices of energy products. Otherwise, the prices of food products were steady.

Seasonal weakness in prices of services

For seasonal reason, the prices of services were weakening in September 2010 (—0.8%, as in September 2009). Year-on-year, the change reached +1.4% (+2.2% in September 2009).

This weakness is due to the seasonal declines linked with summer time, declines which were prevailing over the rises of the rates with the start of the school year.

Seasonal increase in prices of manufactured products

In September, the prices of manufactured products were increasing by 0.7% (+0.3% in September 2009; stability year-on-year).

The energy prices were rising

In September, the energy prices were rising (+0.5%; +9.8% year-on-year).

Stability of food products

The prices of food products were steady in September 2010 (+0.8% year-on-year). The seasonal rise in the prices of fresh products (+1.3%; +4.6% in September 2009; +9.9% year-on-year) is counterbalanced by a decrease in the prices of food products except fresh products (—0.2%; —0.3% year-on-year).

Stability of core-inflation

Core-inflation (ISJ) was steady in September 2010 (+0.8% year-on-year).

The harmonised consumer price index (HCPI) was also steady (+1.8% year-on-year).
