In May, households’ expenditure in goods decreased by 0.8% in volume*, after having stepped back by –1.4% in April. This decrease is mainly imputable to a decrease of food products and engineered goods, in particular textile and leather products. On the other hand, energy expenditure markedly bounced.

Durables : slightly decreasing
After a sharp decrease in April (–6.4%), households’ expenditure in durables slightly decreased in May (–0.6%). This decrease is due to a step back in car purchases of lesser extend than that of April (–1.8% after –10.3%). Household durables decreased again in May (–0.4%, after –1.9% in March).
Textile-leather : sharp decrease in May
In May, purchases in textile and leather sharply decreased (–4.4%) after an increase in April (+1.6%).
Other engineered goods : marked step back
Expenditures in other engineered goods decreased in May (–1.3%) after a slight increase in April (+0.3%). The overall decrease is mainly imputable to a sharp step back of hardware products expenditure. This year’s calendar for May (May 1st and 8th being on Sundays, and Whitsun and Ascension Day in June) was less favorable to such expenses.
Consumption of energy products bounced in May (+3.4% after –3.4% in April). After mild weather conditions in April, which tempered the need for heating energy, households’ consumption went back to normal in May.
