[* Volumes are chained and all figures are trading days and seasonally adjusted.]

Durables: large increase in household durables purchases

Expenditures in durables increased drastically in May (+3.6%) after a decrease in April (–4.5%).

While car purchases were stable (–0.1% after –9.6%), this overall increase is imputable to household durables (+7.3% after –0.5%).

If all the components of households durables were dynamic, consumers electronics increased the most. This is due to the “world cup effect**” on tv purchases and the shift from analogic to numeric tv broadcasts in Bretagne and Pays-de-la-Loire, which induced extra purchases of tv sets and numeric decoders.

[** for more elements on the soccer world cup effets on tv sets purchases, see Insee’s June 2010 Conjoncture in France.]

Textile: decreasing anew

In May, expenditures in textile decreased by 1.6% after a drop in April (–1.1%%).

Other manufactured goods: drags its feets

Expenditures in other manufactured goods decreased in May: –0.2% after +0.7% in April. The dynamism of jewelry and books did not compensate the downturn in hardware purchases.

April growth of consumption in manufactured goods is scaled down by 0.1 point

In April, the change in consumption in manufactured goods is now estimated at –1.3% (–1.2% initially announced). The variation of expenditures in durables is downscaled by 0.1 point; car purchases are revised by –0.1 point and those in household durables by –0.2 point. Textile expenditures are upgraded by 0.1 point. Expenditures in other manufactured goods are downgraded by 0.1 point.

These revisions are mainly due to the update of seasonal and working day adjustment. To a lesser extent, they are explained by new informations on other manufactured goods.
