In May 2016, manufacturing output was stable

Please note: all the series are seasonally (SA) and working-day adjusted (WDA).

The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

In May 2016, output was stable in the manufacturing industry after a rebound in April (+1.3%). It fell back in the whole industry (-0.5% after +1.2%).

Manufacturing output diminished over the past three months (-0.9%)

Over the past three months, output diminished in the manufacturing industry (-0.9% q-o-q), and to a lesser extent in the overall industry (-0.3%).

Output decreased in “other manufacturing” (-1.3%), in the manufacture of food products and beverages (–1.5%), in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (-1.3%). It tumbled in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (-5.0%). Conversely, output rose sharply in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply (+3.7%) and in the manufacture of transport equipment (+2.9%).

Over the year, manufacturing output increased by +0.3%

Manufacturing output of the past three months of 2016 increased slightly compared to the same months of 2015 (+0.3%, y-o-y); so did overall industrial output (+0.5% y-o-y).

Over the year, manufacturing output soared in the manufacture of transport equipment (+7.4%), and rose more moderately in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply (+1.6%). Conversely, it shrank in the manufacture of food products and beverages (-1.9%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (-1.4%), and plummeted in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (-10.8%). Finally, it was stable in “other manufacturing”.

In May 2016, output tumbled in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (-3.9%)

Output fell back markedly in electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply (-4.6%) as temperatures moved closer to seasonal standards in May.

Output collapsed in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (-23.0%)

Output collapsed in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (-23.0%) because of the shutdown of a refinery and lock-outs that occurred in several others owing to social movements in May.

Output fell back in the manufacture of transport equipment (-1.1% after +4.3% in April)

In the transport equipment branch, output slipped back after a sharp increase in April, whether in the manufacture of other transport equipment (-1.4% after +5.1%) or in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (-0.8% after +3.2%).

Output continued to decline in the manufacture of food products and beverages (-0.9% after -0.8%)

Output decreased again in the manufacture of food products and beverages (-0.9% after -0.8% in April), particularly in the manufacture of beverages.

Output accelerated in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+1.8% after +0.9%)

Output accelerated sharply in the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (+3.5% after +0.2%). It recovered in the manufacture of electrical equipment (+3.3% after -0.3%). Conversely, it weakened in the manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. (-0.6% after +2.3%).

Output was still on the rise in “other manufacturing” (+0.4% after +1.2%)

Output grew in almost all branches within “other manufacturing”: strongly in pharmaceuticals (+2.8%), in the manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment (+1.2%) and in the manufacture of textiles, wearing apparel (+5.7%), and very slightly in other manufacturing: repair and installation of machinery and equipment (+0.2%). On the contrary, it plummeted in chemicals (-4.0%), due in particular to social movements in May.
