2004 Demographic report - Net decrease in death rates

Summary

On January 1, 2005, the population of Metropolitan France and the overseas departments is estimated at 62.4 million. Births remained steady at a high level in 2004 while deaths have clearly declined. The natural balance has thus reached a level that has not been seen for 20 years. The net migration has risen slightly. The life expectancy has strongly increased : it reached 76.7 years for men and 83.8 for women. The number of marriages has continued decreasing while PACS ("Pacte Civil de Solidarité": civil partnership registrations) are more and more popular.
