Housing became more comfortable in 2006, but not for everyone

Bénédicte Castéran, Layla Ricroch, division Logement, Insee

Summary

Whilst floor space in detached houses is steadily increasing, the size of flats has hardly changed over the last 25 years. Those living alone, especially the over-60s, enjoy more floor space than other groups. It is increasingly rare for homes not to have minimal comfort, but 350,000 homes in France still lack a basic level of comfort. Soundproofing has slightly improved. More and more households are homeowners (57.2% in 2006, compared with 50.7% in 1984).
