France in figures

This publication was produced by the French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) with the assistance of the Foreign Affairs Ministry. Many data shown are available and updated on INSEE's website.

Metropolitan France comprises the 96 départements (administrative divisions) of the mainland and Corsica. There are also four overseas départements (DOMs): Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana and Reunion Island. The total set of 100 départements forms the entity that is a Member State of the European Union and is referred to as "France" in statistical publications. The Guadeloupe département no longer includes the municipalities of Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin, which became "overseas collectivities" in 2007. The statistical data presented in this publication do not still integrate the 5th French overseas Mayotte département, created on March 31st, 2011.
