XML namespace and geographic data in RDF/XML format

XML namespace

This space displays a library of types, elements, and attributes for representing the basic identification data handled by INSEE and its partners. The types can be used in XML schema to represent these data as elements or attributes bearing randomly assigned names and belonging to any namespace; the elements and attributes can be directly included in any XML document.

The description of these basic data has been split up into independent modules describing specific functional areas (identification of business firms, private individuals, categories of economic activity, legal categories, and geographic localities). A common module comprises a small set of basic definitions used by the specialized modules.

Geographic data in RDF format

In this section, INSEE publishes data derived from the Official Geographic Code (Code Officiel Géographique: COG), modeled on the Semantic Web RDF standard, and available in RDF-XML format. This formalization facilitates the data's automatic use by applications compatible with these new technologies. INSEE performed the formalization work in cooperation with the Mondeca firm.
For more information on the Semantic Web, see the W3C site.

The data published concern the following French administrative units: regions, départements, arrondissements, cantons, and communes (municipalities).
