Zone for study and development / ZEAT

Definition

In 1967, Insee, in relation with the National Economic Planning Agency and the DATAR (Delegation for Territorial Planning and Regional Action) split the territory into eight major Zones for Study and Development (ZEAT) :

PARIS REGION - Ile de France ;
PARIS BASIN - Burgundy, Centre, Champagne-Ardenne, Lower and Upper Normandy, Picardie ;
NORTH - Nord Pas-de-Calais ;
EAST - Alsace, Franche-Comté, Lorraine ;
WEST - Brittany, Pays de la Loire, Poitou-Charentes ;
SOUTH-WEST - Aquitaine, Limousin, Midi-Pyrénées ;
CENTRE-EAST - Auvergne, Rhône-Alpes ;
MEDITERRANEAN - Languedoc-Roussillon, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Corsica.

This division, created during the big territorial planning phase, is still used sometimes.

At European level, the division into ZEAT corresponds to level 1 of NUTS (nomenclature of units for territorial statistics).
