Poverty rate

Definition

The poverty rate corresponds to the proportion of individuals (or households) whose standard of living is lower in a given year than a set threshold, called the poverty line (expressed in euros).
The INSEE, like EUROSTAT and the other European countries, measures the income poverty in a relative manner whereas other countries (such as the United States and Australia) have an absolute approach. In the approach in relative terms, the poverty line is determined with regard to the distribution of the standards of living of the whole population. In Europe the threshold of 60 % of the median standard of living is privelegied.
