Definition

The National Institute for Health Monitoring is a government-run public institution, founded in 1998 and placed under the authority of the Ministry for Health. The principal responsibilities of the institute are to monitor the evolution of the general state of health of the population, for disease-control purposes as well as for reasons of health vigilance and sound understanding of health risk. The institute is also responsible for alerting the authorities to any potential risk, and offering recommendations on health issues, particularly disease control (tropical infectious diseases, Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease etc.) It is the successor institution to the National Public Health Network, which was founded in 1992.
