The Regional Adapted Education Institutions (EREA) created by Decree n° 54-46 of 4 January 1954 receive pupils who cannot attend normal general or professional education classes profitably. The Decree of 30 August 1985 on the administrative and financial organisation of local public education institutions (middle schools, high schools and special education schools) classified them as secondary education institutions. The teaching dispensed in these EREA covers the whole of secondary education and consists mainly of professional teaching, either specifically adapted or not.
