Every ten years or so the Ministry for Transport, INSEE and the National Institute for Research on Transport and Transport Safety conduct a National Transport Survey. The 2007-2008 survey was the first since 1993-1994, with studies previously conducted in 1966-1967, 1973-1974 and 1981-1982.
The purpose of these studies is to gain an understanding of the travel habits of households of French residents, and their use of various modes of transport, both public and private. The survey provides a coherent, global overview of mobility and allows us to analyse the number and type of vehicles at the disposal of households and how they are used.
The survey also provides answers to questions about interregional and international traffic flows, which have very important consequences for investment, as well as allowing us to measure total distance travelled, a figure which is essential to understanding environmental problems.
By considering the results alongside those from previous surveys, this survey provides useful spatial and temporal comparisons.
In the 2007-2008 survey, 20,220 households resident in metropolitan France were surveyed, 11,700 for the national sample and the rest in the regional supplementary surveys conducted in Ile-de-France, Pays de Loire, Bretagne, Languedoc-Roussillon and Midi-Pyrénées.
