The purpose of the Survey on Career Paths and Backgrounds in 2008, conducted jointly with the National Institute for Demographic Studies, is to help us understand the extent to which social background is itself a factor contributing to inequality or to limitations in access to the different resources of life in society.
The questionnaire explores the migratory history of respondents or their parents; it charts the progress of their academic and professional careers, their married life and family solidarity, their residential history and the conditions of their housing.
It also studies the transmission of languages and religions in the family setting. Finally, it examines individuals’ access to the resources of life in society (work, housing, services, care etc.) as well as the discriminations which could impede such access.
Around 22,000 people in metropolitan France are surveyed.
