As the VAT declarations (CA3) which allow us to produce turnover estimates are only available after a delay of 60 days, the business survey of food supermarkets (EMAGSA) conducted by INSEE aims to obtain estimates of the turnover of companies managing supermarkets, hypermarkets and department stores around a month after the date of observation, and to improve upon the early 30-day retail estimate demanded by Eurostat, and currently estimated on the basis of various sources.
The business survey of food supermarkets (EMAGSA) touches upon the themes of turnover, distribution of sales by product type (food, other goods and fuel) and the spatial evolution of the shops, in total surface area and in number. It focuses on a sample of around 300 businesses in metropolitan France which are surveyed every month.
