Total employment includes salaried employment and non-salaried employment. The annual series of total employment are estimated since September, 2009 with the ESTEL ((Estimations d'emploi localisées – Localised employment estimates) by department, region, status and business sector from two main sources: the annual data declarations (known as "large format DADS") because they include the staff of the civil service and the employees of particular employers, to whom we add the staff of non-salaried workers. The measured unit is the number of persons in employment. The employment is expressed in number of persons, that is corrected by the multi-activity of certain workers.
The quarterly evolutions of employment are calculated on a more restricted field (only on the field of the not agricultural trade sectors and on the part private of the not trade sector, in metropolitan France). They are elaborated from three sources:
- the statistics established by URSSAF from the answers of establishments paying national insurance contributions;
- survey on the activity and the conditions of use of the workforce (Acemo) realized by Dares (Ministry of Employment). It is only used for the flash estimate;
- the monthly declarations of the companies of temporary works sent to Pôle Emploi are also used to calculate the temporary work every quarter. The calculation is realized by Dares
